James H Phillips, DDS
I chose to practice dentistry because it allows me to use my head, my hands, and my heart to serve others. I learn and grow each day in practice. It is very rewarding to help alleviate pain and restore aesthetics and function, to see a rise in self-esteem, and to witness the restoration of comfort and function in someone I have treated.
I feel very privileged to have worked in the field of dentistry for the past 27 years. There is a sacred trust and friendship that develops between me and my patients as we work together to achieve ideal dental health. I am passionate about getting to know my patients in great depth so I can serve them best as their dentist and friend. My patients’ satisfaction, comfort, and successful treatment outcomes are very rewarding and most important to me. My life is greatly enriched by meeting the needs of my patients and helping them feel confident that dental treatment can be gentle, long lasting, and aesthetic. It is also fun to educate and coach patients to improve their oral and overall health by implementing effective preventive care measures.
Education and Continuing Education
- Bachelor of Science, molecular biology — University of Washington, Seattle, 1980
- Doctorate of Dental Surgery — University of Washington, Seattle, 1985
I find it fun, exciting, and rewarding to stay abreast of the many new techniques and materials used in dentistry. It allows me to bring the most reliable and effective dental materials and techniques to treat my patients with consistently excellent treatment outcomes. Additionally, it helps me to discuss with my patients the advantages and disadvantages of different options as we jointly decide on the best customized treatment plan. As a member of the Pacific Northwest Dental Study Club, I study state-of-the-art preventive, periodontal, restorative, and implant dental care. I have attended more than 600 hours of continuing education in my 27 years of dental practice and complete at least 25 hours every year. Continuing education is imperative in helping the patient achieve optimal oral health, function, and aesthetics.

Outside the Office
I was born and raised in Seattle, WA, and have lived in the South Bellevue area for more than 19 years. My wife, Sharon, and I have been married for 28 years. She is an RN and currently works as our office manager, coordinating all front desk and receptionist duties. We have two grown children, Curtis, a teacher, and Julie, who is studying to be a social worker. Ernie, Teddy, and Chrissy are our three beloved dogs who always provide a warm welcome the minute we walk through the door.
In my free time I enjoy staying active and can often be found running, playing tennis and golf, biking, and hiking. I am an avid gardener, with a yard full of roses, dahlias, lilies, and peonies. I also love challenging adventures and have ridden a bicycle from Seattle to San Francisco, climbed Mt. Rainier, and have been a competitive marathon runner. I am passionate about my faith as a Christian as it gives me great strength, peace, and perspective. I have been active in my church as a Sunday School teacher, committee member, and youth group volunteer.
I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful community, and I believe strongly in giving back to those who have given so much to me over the years. Every year I work with local charities and nonprofit organizations to host fundraisers and sponsor various events.
